Bernard Charnwut Chan is President of Asia Financial Group and of group company, Asia Insurance, which is viewed as one of the financially strongest insurers in Hong Kong.  Asia Financial Group received a great deal of business press coverage in 2006 when the group decided to dispose of a key subsidiary, Asia Commercial Bank (ACB), in order to focus on building its insurance business.  After a very active tendering process, ACB was sold to Public Bank Group at a strong valuation of HK$4.5 billion, or 2.5 times book value.

Bernard's Thai-Chinese family has a long history in banking in the region, and he is also an Advisor of the Hong Kong branch of Bangkok Bank Ltd, the largest international commercial bank in South East Asia, which was founded by his grandfather, Chin Sophonpanich.

To many people in Hong Kong, Bernard is perhaps best known as a member of Legco, where he represents the insurance industry. In 2004, he was appointed as a non-official member of Exco, Hong Kong's highest policy making body.  In 2006, barely in his 40s, he was awarded Hong Kong SAR's Gold Bauhinia Star.

Among his many business and community service positions, Bernard is a chairman of the Hong Kong-Thailand Business Council.  As chairman of the Hong Kong Council for Social Services, he is committed to building bridges between the business world and the welfare sector.  He is also deputy chairman of the council of Oxfam Hong Kong and chairman of its annual Trailwalker event, which he himself has completed several times.

The Power Lunch is a question-driven session with no fixed topic so that every participant may informally discuss subjects of their own interest with Bernard. Possible topics may include:

*             How has Asia Financial Group been able to build such a strong position in insurance ?

*             What are the differences between managing family businesses and multinational corporations ?

*             Business links between Hong Kong and Thailand

*             How did he make the decision to enter into politics ?

*             How can the business world and the welfare sector better work together ?

RSVP: This will be a restricted event limited to the first 10 respondents. Please email secretariat@hbsahk.org ASAP to indicate that you wish to attend and include your graduating year from HBS.
